L'antica conceria nel museo MUST di Matera

The oldest part of the excavation of our complex consists of a room that was used as a tannery: it has four tanks of different sizes dug by hand in the calcarenite, where the skins were soaked in water and “frasche” (leaves, branches and bark) rich in tannin, to prevent putrefaction. On the ceiling there are cavities called bushings useful for the passage of ropes for drying the skins.
